Henry is four days old today, and all day long, I’ve been hearing the lyrics to an old Barbara Streisand song in my head:
Jenny rebecca, four days old
How do you like the world so far?
Jenny rebecca, four days old
What a lucky, lucky, lucky
Lucky girl you are
For you have swings to be swung on
Trees to be climbed up
Days to be young on
Toys you can wind up
Grass to be lying on
Sun up above
Pillows for crying on
When you’re in love
Ponies for riding
Wind in your hair
Slides to be sliding on
Leaves in the air
Dogs to be caring for
Love to be giving
Dreams to be daring for
Long as you’re living
Yes, you have
Dreams to be daring for
Long as you’re living
Jenny rebecca, four days old
What a lucky, lucky, lucky
Lucky girl you are…
Just replace Jenny Rebecca with Henry David, and “lucky girl” with “lucky boy,” and this is exactly how I’m feeling. I wonder what he thinks of the world so far…He’s so small, and for the most part, so quiet. And I just want to be able to ask what goes on in his mind while we’re busy admiring him and photographing his every move. Henry had his first doctor’s appointment today–his first venture out past the confines of our block and the hospital block down the street. He snuggled up like a pro in his car seat and looked at us as if to say, “So, mom and dad, where are we off to now?” And we took a deep breath as we drove down the street more slowly than usual, praying for his protection and safety, hopeful that our time out would be completely uneventful. We are absolutely new and over-worried parents, just as can be expected four and half days into this adventure with our boy.
Tonight, Henry is in my lap sound asleep and we’ve made it successfully through another day. We are all wrapped up in him and loving this time together here at home with Henry David, four days old. What a lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky family we are.
